Why walking is the most underrated form of exercise

An everyday activity, walking needs minimum investment, minimum preparation, and can be done anywhere...by anyone! As Hippocrates famously said, “Walking is a man’s best medicine”, but like everything else in our life, we tend to not value things we don’t have to pay money for. So here’s a list of health benefits of walking that you should pay attention to:

Better mental health

We are in the midst of not just a national, but a global mental health epidemic. Anxiety and depression are on a constant rise in both adults and children. Daily brisk walking for even 30 mins by the entire family is a wonderful exercise for some quality mental care. Plus, you’ll get to spend precious time with your family too. Any exercise releases endorphins (the feel-good hormone) that can improve your mood, reduce stress levels and promote emotional and mental satisfaction.

It can boost creativity

Running out of ideas? Go for a run. Or better yet, walk! Stressing won’t do anything. Just keep your work aside for a while and reach for your shoes. At least that is what the great Steve Jobs did. The late Apple founder was a fan of ‘power walks’ as they helped him to stimulate creative thinking.

Variation in the speed of walking has tremendous effects. Switch from leisure walking to brisk walking, and now it’s an aerobic exercise. You just have to be fast enough to raise your heart rate, make yourself sweat a little, and slightly breathless. Maintaining a speed of roughly 7 km/hr for 30 minutes can help you burn 150 calories.

And here’s a benefit we all know - walking is a great stressbuster. It calms you down, clears your head, and is the ultimate LISS (low-intensity steady-state cardio). In fact, keeping in mind our busy lives, instead of high-intensity workouts, sometimes it’s preferable to just take a walk to fight the effects of stress on the body.

It can help ward off disease

Did you know, walking regularly can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by more than 40%? That's not it - it even reduces all age-related death from all causes by a whopping 25%. Suffering from High BP? Just start walking regularly and feel the effects!

Good for digestion:

It is a common piece of health advice, especially in our country that taking a stroll after a meal is good for digestion. This is because, when you take a short walk, your gastric juices get activated and help in faster digestion. This makes your stomach feel light and delivers a better quality of sleep.
