Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment in India

Arthritis Diet & Joint Inflammation

Rheumatoid Arthritis, also known as rheumatoid disease, is an autoimmune and systemic disease that causes chronic (long lasting) inflammation of the joints. People with autoimmune diseases have antibodies in their blood. These antibodies attack the body tissues, causing inflammation. In rheumatoid arthritis, the lining of the joints is attacked, making them swell. Joint inflammation also results in redness, warmth and swelling.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

While rheumatoid arthritis generally affects the hands and feet first, it can also affect other parts of the body such as the eyes, skin, lungs, nerves and heart.

While rheumatoid arthritis usually manifests more commonly between the ages of 30-40, it can affect individuals of any age. Rheumatoid arthritis affects different people in different ways. For some, the joint symptoms may occur over several years, while for others rheumatoid arthritis builds quickly. In some cases, the individual may have rheumatoid arthritis for a short period of time and the symptoms eventually disappear (remission). Individuals who have rheumatoid arthritis have higher risks of getting a heart attack.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment in India

Currently, there is no cure for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). The rheumatoid arthritis treatment reduces joint swelling or inflammation. It also helps relieve joint pain and minimizes deformity, disability and damage caused to the joints.

The rheumatoid arthritis treatment includes occupational or physiotherapy, medication and regular exercise. In case of extreme cases, where there is joint damage, surgery may be performed for correction of the joint deformity. In early stages, aggressive arthritis treatment can be very useful.

Different types of drugs may be given to control rheumatoid arthritis. They may include Non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), Disease-Modifying Anti-rheumatic Drugs (DMARDs), steroids, immunosuppressant and biologics.

If any of the above methods do not work, surgery is offered to repair damaged joints and commence regular movement again. Rheumatoid arthritis treatment through surgery also helps reduce joint pain and fix deformity of the joints.

Different rheumatoid arthritis surgeries may include:

  • Anthroplasty: In which there is total replacement of the affected joint which is removed by surgery and replaced with an artificial joint made of metal and plastic.
  • Synovectomy: The inflamed lining of the affected joint is removed in this method.
  • Tendon Repair: Loose or torn tendons are repaired through this method.
  • Arthrodesis: Sometimes referred to as artificial ankylosis, this is a method through which the joint may be surgically fixed to promote bone fusion.

Rheumatoid arthritis diet helps in easing the joint pain, swelling and stiffness in joints and relieves fatigue. Diet is only an adjuvant to medical or surgical management

Fish oil supplements contain a high amount of omega-3 fatty acids that fight inflammation.

A diet rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, cereals and monounsaturated fats is said to have helped many individuals suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. It is important to supplement your diet with calcium (for bone-boosting), Vitamin D, Vitamin B, Vitamin E and folic acid.

Along with the rheumatoid arthritis diet, you may also want a heat or cold compress. Additionally, reduce your weight, use relaxation methods and adopt other complementary therapies such as acupuncture, chiropractic and more.
