Abdominoplasty: Tummy Tuck and Abdominal Muscles Procedure

A tummy tuck procedure, also known as an abdominoplasty is not a weight loss option. It is a cosmetic procedure.

During this surgery, the abdominal muscles are tightened and extra fat is removed. This surgery is available to both men and women, who are healthy or have obesity problems. Post pregnancy a lot of women opt for tummy tucks to tighten loose skin and shape up their abdominal muscles. Either way, a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is a major surgery and you must prepare yourself to make an informed decision before undergoing it.

There are two types of tummy tucks. It is important that you consult with you doctor about which option would be better for you. So what are these two options?

Complete Abdominoplasty

You will go through the surgery having a cut from one hipbone to the other. The surgeon shapes and removed excess fat, skin and tissue. Post-surgery you may have drainage tubes attached to your skin for some duration.

Partial Abdominoplasty

These surgeries are performed for removal of excess fat around the navel area. Unlike the complete tummy tuck, your belly button may not be moved. This is a much shorter procedure and takes about a couple hours to be completed.

Do Not Opt for Tummy Tucks If:

  • You are pregnant or are planning to have more children.
  • You are trying to use it as a weight loss option as it doesn’t work as one. A tummy tuck helps tighten sagging skin and fat from your abdominal region.

Ensure that you get detailed consultation before you undergo the surgery so that you have an understanding of what to expect. It’s crucial you know the risks and procedure involved so that there are no surprises during or after the surgery.
